Experts assured that the Russian Federation, against the backdrop of rising world prices for sugar, is fully provided with it

INTERFAX.RU - The Russian Federation is fully provided with sugar of its own production, which can protect the domestic market from fluctuations in world prices, experts say.

According to the industry association Soyuzrossakhar, since the beginning of April, world prices for raw sugar have increased by 9%, to $537 per ton, for white sugar - by 11%, to $702 per ton. Since the beginning of the year, their growth amounted to 26% and 23%, respectively, and reached 11-year highs. "The increase in world prices is associated with the expected reduction in export supplies of sugar from India due to a decrease in forecast values for sugar production in the current season," the report says.

Meanwhile, the Russian Federation is fully provided with sugar of its own production. According to the analytical service of Soyuzrossahar, since the beginning of 2023, 490 thousand tons of white sugar have been produced in the Russian Federation, which is 200 thousand tons more than in the same period last year. Currently, three sugar factories continue to produce sugar from sugar syrup and molasses. In total, in the current season (August-July), sugar production is expected to reach 6.1 million tons, which is 300 thousand tons more than a year earlier.

The export of Russian sugar remains at the level of average monthly two-year values. According to Soyuzrossahar, in total, more than 90 thousand tons of sugar have been exported since the beginning of 2023, which corresponds to the average monthly export rate within the framework of the EAEU indicative sugar balance for 2023. The main importers of Russian sugar are Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Commodity stocks of sugar in the Russian Federation at the end of the current season (July 31, 2023) are projected at the level of the previous year.

Soyuzrossakhar also recalled that the Russian Federation has a quota for duty-free import this year of 100 thousand tons of raw sugar, which, if necessary, can be used to produce white sugar.
