Saudi Arabia and the UAE are increasing purchases of oil products in Russia with re-export

INTERFAX.RU - Saudi Arabia and the UAE have increased purchases of petroleum products in Russia, Russian trade representatives in these countries said during the National Oil and Gas Forum.

Russian trade representative in Saudi Arabia Stanislav Yankovets said that in 2022 Russia significantly increased the supply of petroleum products to the kingdom, mainly diesel and fuel oil. Saudi Arabia, itself a major oil producer, buys oil products from Russia at a discount and exports its oil to world markets, he explained. According to him, Saudi Arabia purchased Russian oil products worth $250 million last year.

Yankovets believes that Saudi Arabia can be used to further export Russian oil products to Africa and other destinations. He also expressed the opinion that in the future there will be opportunities to supply oil products to Saudi Arabia through Iran, as these countries have recently improved diplomatic relations.

Saudi Arabia has a fairly large demand for Russian fertilizers for consumption both domestically and for re-export, Yankovets also said. According to him, the parties are also working to establish direct correspondent relations between banks. However, Saudi credit institutions "are under too much pressure from unfriendly countries," Yankovets added.

In his opinion, it is necessary to create joint transport structures, and there is such interest from the Saudi side. But "we don't feel any interest from our transport companies," the trade representative also said.

Trade between Russia and Saudi Arabia was $2.2 billion in 2021 and $1.6 billion in 2022, Jankovets said, adding that a larger decline was expected.

Andrey Terekhin, Russian trade representative in the UAE, said that trade with the UAE in 2022 amounted to $9 billion, with 25% accounted for by the supply of Russian oil products. The reasons why such a large oil-producing country as the UAE buys Russian oil products, according to the Russian plenipotentiary, "are the same as those of Saudi Arabia." Therefore, there are prospects for the development of such cooperation, Terekhin believes.

He also said that Russia and the UAE are working on mutual recognition of equipment certificates.
